The Great Race is the premiere event for vintage and antique car owners to participate in a time-speed-endurance rally in pursuit of $150,000 in prize money. This year’s event will travel from the Inland Empire of California, starting in Riverside, to the Pacific Northwest, ending in Tacoma, Washington.

Along this route of the best back roads on the West Coast, Butte County is honored to host two stops on Monday, June 24–one at the State Theater in Downtown Oroville at 2:30pm and the other at the City Plaza in Downtown Chico at 5pm.

Downtown Oroville

On the tour, Great Race participants will make a “pit stop” in Downtown Oroville along Myers Street from Miner’s Alley to Robinson Street. The first car is expected to arrive at 2:30 p.m. in front of the Historic Oroville State Theatre cars will be arriving and leaving between the hours of 2:30 and 4:30 p.m., with more than two-dozen on hand at any one time.

As part of the “pit stop” festivities the Oro Dam Cruisers Car Club will have a park-in adjacent to the Great Race stop so visitors can spend the afternoon swooning over the classic cars. The State Theatre will be hosting the drivers and their co-pilots for a quick snack as they stretch their legs in the historic downtown.

Downtown Chico

Once the drivers depart from Oroville they will wind their way to Downtown Chico for judging of that event leg. This family-friendly stop will include a show of the Great Race classic cars and their pilot teams and an adjacent car show. At 5:00 p.m., a guest speaker will welcome the travelers to town accompanied by singing of the National Anthem and Color Guard.

The downtown Chico event will take place from 5:00 -7:30 p.m.
