Explore Butte County Releases Final Sports Tourism Infrastructure Master Plan

Explore Butte County has the release of the final Butte County Sports Tourism Infrastructure Master Plan, a comprehensive, data-driven roadmap designed to strengthen local sports facilities, reduce travel burdens on local athletes, and position Butte County as a competitive regional destination for youth and amateur sports tourism.

Developed in partnership with Hunden Partners, a nationally recognized advisor in sports-anchored destination development, the Master Plan evaluates Butte County’s existing indoor and outdoor sports infrastructure, regional market demand, tournament opportunities, and economic impacts. The result is a phased strategy that aligns community needs with tourism-driven economic development.

“This plan gives Butte County a clear pathway to invest in sports infrastructure that serves residents first while capturing the economic benefits of sports tourism,” said Nichole Farley, Executive Director of Explore Butte County. “Families are already traveling outside of Butte County for tournaments. This roadmap shows how we can keep that activity — and those visitor dollars — right here at home.”

Key Findings and Opportunities

The Master Plan identifies significant unmet demand for tournament-ready facilities in Butte County, particularly for:

  • Multi-field outdoor complexes for soccer, baseball, and softball

  • Indoor multi-court facilities capable of hosting basketball, volleyball, and other court sports

  • Upgraded amenities such as lighting, restrooms, concessions, and centralized scheduling infrastructure

Regional analysis shows that comparable facilities in Sacramento, Placer Valley, the Bay Area, and Reno consistently draw teams from Butte County, resulting in lost economic impact locally. The plan concludes that Butte County is well positioned to compete for regional tournaments if it develops modern, scalable facilities supported by coordinated programming and destination marketing.

Economic and Community Impact

At full stabilization, the recommended facilities are projected to host more than 60 regional events annually, generate hundreds of thousands of visits per year, and create meaningful economic activity through hotel stays, dining, retail spending, and local employment. Equally important, the plan highlights benefits to residents, including improved access to quality facilities, reduced travel time for youth sports families, and enhanced recreational amenities.

Next Steps

Explore Butte County will work with local partners, jurisdictions, and stakeholders to review the Master Plan, prioritize near-term projects, and identify funding and partnership opportunities consistent with community goals and available resources.
