Along this route of the best back roads on the West Coast, Butte County is honored to host two stops on Monday, June 24–one at the State Theater in Downtown Oroville at 2pm and the other at the City Plaza in Downtown Chico at 5pm.
On the tour, Great Race participants will make a “pit stop” in Downtown Oroville along Myers Street from Miner’s Alley to Robinson Street. The first car is expected to arrive at 2:30 p.m. in front of the Historic Oroville State Theatre cars will be arriving and leaving between the hours of 2pm and 5pm, with more than two-dozen on hand at any one time.
As part of the “pit stop” festivities the Oro Dam Cruisers Car Club will have a park-in adjacent to the Great Race stop so visitors can spend the afternoon swooning over the classic cars. The State Theatre will be hosting the drivers and their co-pilots for a quick snack as they stretch their legs in the historic downtown.
Once the drivers depart from Oroville they will wind their way to Downtown Chico for judging of that event leg. This family-friendly stop, centered around the downtown plaza, will include a show of the Great Race classic cars and their pilot teams and an adjacent car show hosted by Chico Concours. Road closures in downtown Chico will begin at about 4:00 p.m.
Activities in downtown Chico will begin at 4:45 p.m., and will include the singing of the National Anthem by Chloe Brandi from Inspire High School, presentation of the colors by Chico Fire Department, and a welcome to the city by Assistant City Manager, Chris Constantin. (You’ll definitely want to arrive before 5:00 so you can take part in the festivities.)
Once the Great Race-ers cross the finish line, on Main Street, they will park around the plaza and enjoy a picnic-style dinner catered by Kinder’s Barbecue. Drivers and co-pilots will head back to their cars to answer questions, take photos, and showcase their machines. Cars will be on display from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
For those who are going to grab dinner before (or during) the show, the following restaurants have confirmed they will be open Monday night:
